What Should You Look For In Your First Hunting Rifle?

by Amanda Phillips

Buying your first hunting rifle is more than just choosing one that is within your price range. There are many considerations that you need to factor into your decision. Although price is important, you want to be sure that you get a rifle that is in line with your skill level and the amount of hunting you plan to do. Here are some tips for selecting a hunting rifle.

Start With an Entry Level Rifle

One of the biggest mistakes that some newbies make is opting for a rifle that is for intermediate or advanced hunters. Even though your finances might allow for such a purchase, you need to focus on entry level pieces. There are a couple of reasons you should do this.

Entry level pieces usually have safeguards in place to account for your beginner skill levels. As a result, you are less likely to have an accident, such as a misfire. Entry level pieces also can be passed down. If you have children or other young people in your family, you will have a safe piece that you can give to them that you will have experience in operating.

Select the Right Scope

If you choose the wrong scope, you will have trouble catching game. Finding the right scope to do the job can take some time, but there are some guidelines you should focus on in your search.

For instance, if you plan to hunt for whitetail deer, look for a rifle with a low power, such as a three scope. The scope offers enough of a view that you can clearly see the deer and its surrounding area and you can also get a relatively close shot.

Higher powered scopes often mean that you will be missing game. There is a common misconception that higher powered scopes offer better shooting, but when it comes to hunting deer and game of similar sizes, it does not change the speed at which the bullet leaves the rifle. It does not mean that you will shoot farther either. What it could mean is that you end up with a less reliable sense of the deer and its surroundings.

There are other factors that influence the type of hunting rifle you should select. Work with a professional dealer to learn what those factors are and to get help with selecting your first rifle.
